Global Maritime Designs Mooring for Wavepiston WEC

Global Maritime has recently secured the design and engineering of mooring and riser components for Wavepiston wave energy converter (WEC) that is planned to be tested at the PLOCAN test site in the Canary Islands.

The Wavepiston project, Competitive Wave Energy to Islands, has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation – SME Instrument programme.

“Currently, we are one of the partners to the Horizon 2020 project OPERA which has been running since 2016 and will come to a conclusion in July 2019. Our role in OPERA has been to provide marine advisory and numerical validation of the mooring system,” Global Maritime said through social media.

Between 2010 and 2018 the company worked with Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) to provide mooring design, marine operations and mooring procurement for three separate WECs.

The PB150 was installed in the Moray firth test site, PB40 at the New Jersey test site, and the PB3 unit is designed for deployment at the Amelia B platform in the Adriatic Sea.
