Aquatera, EMEC, PNNL Host Renewable Energy Symposium

Aquatera, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL), recently hosted a symposium on Global Market Opportunities for Marine Renewable Energy in Edinburgh.

The symposium brought together leading organizations and individuals in the global energy sector to discuss the opportunities for marine renewable energy development around the globe.

Participants discussed how the marine energy sector can help tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental, social and economic challenges; including climate change adaptation, decarbonisation of the global energy sector, rural electrification, poverty reduction, food security, provision of clean water, and energy security.

The symposium considered various possible applications for marine renewable energy such as electricity generation, provision of energy for offshore applications including aquaculture, offshore infrastructure and instrumentation, desalinisation and production of alternative fuels such as hydrogen.

The symposium included 44 participants from 28 organizations, representing 12 countries and many different stakeholder groups including industry, government, funding organizations, regulators, technology developers, research organizations and private investors.
