Swedish marine energy developer Minesto has released a video showcasing its greatest achievement of the passing year – the launch and commissioning of the 500kW utility-scale Deep Green tidal power plant.
“As we look back on 2018, we see a year when the world really woke up to climate change and the fact that the time for talk is over and the time for action is now.
“Over the last year, we have seen an increasing understanding from key stakeholders and decision-makers that for a sustainable global energy transition, we need more renewable energy sources that can supply predictable and cost-effective electricity to the growing world population.
“We also see a year where Minesto has made substantial progress to make sure that our unique ocean energy technology becomes a key component in the global clean energy transition,” the company said summarizing the year behind us.
In 2018, Minesto scaled up its patented concept for generating green electricity from low-flow tidal streams and ocean currents.
The company installed, commissioned and verified the Deep Green technology for the first time with a commercial-scale unit the coast of Holyhead in North Wales – the DG500.
Commenting on the video recap of its achievements, Minesto said: “It is a celebration of and a testament to our incredible employees in Holyhead, Portaferry, Gothenburg and Taipei. It is a taste of things to come. It is the future of renewable energy.”
Concluding the year 2018, the Swedish developer entered formal planning phase together with the Welsh government for the second stage of public funding for its Deep Green tidal energy project in Wales.
Minesto submitted a project proposal for the grant amounting to €11.2 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) that would fund the next phase of the Welsh project featuring the company’s subsea kite tidal power technology.
The project scope covers continuous operation and power production with the DG500 tidal energy converter that, together with planned upgrades and optimization of Minesto’s utility-scale product range.
