Subhub getting closer to hit Fall of Warness waters

Edinburgh-based engineering consultancy QED Naval is completing final stages of Subhub tidal platform commissioning ahead of its deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

QED Naval completed initial commissioning and testing of Subhub’s ballast control and instrumentation system at a site within Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, the consultancy informed through social media.

The platform was recently transported there for the final stages of commissioning that will include the fitting of the X-beam that supports three tidal turbines.

Beforehand, QED Naval completed the initial outfit and furnishing of all the internal ballast systems for all the hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and control systems.

This variant of the Subhub, called Kraken, has been designed for Schottel SIT 250 turbines each rated at 70kW.

After the final ballast testing, Subhub will be deployed at the Falls of Warness test site, operated by EMEC, for various testing activities.
