Deep Green tidal base molded into shape

The construction of the concrete gravity base foundation structure for Minesto’s Deep Green tidal energy installation has been completed.

The gravity base structure has been built at Birkenhead Docks in Liverpool by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK.

Remaining work consists of welding of towing brackets and preparing the structure for delivery.

Upon delivery, planned for late January 2018, the concrete gravity base will be transported up the River Mersey and across the North Wales coast to Holyhead, according to the Swedish tidal energy developer Minesto.

The foundation structure will be installed at Minesto’s site in Holyhead Deep, some 6 km off Holy Island by ballasting some of its cells with water and lowering it to the sea bed.

Once the structure is at the bottom of the sea in Holyhead Deep, a 500kW Minesto device will be secured to a mooring structure on the foundation. The deployment is planned for 2018.
