Scotrenewables Tidal Power has hit a new milestone with 500MWh generated by its SR2000 tidal turbine deployed off Orkney.

The Scottish based tidal developer said the amount of energy produced from the tides is enough to power 880 households in Orkney.

Last week, the SR2000 floating tidal turbine broke its own record and generated more than 20MWh of clean electricity in a 24-hour period, Scotrenewables Tidal Power informed on social media.

Earlier in September, the company announced that the turbine produced 116MWh in less than a week of continuous generation, providing nearly 7% of Orkney’s electricity demand.

The power is being produced from the 2MW floating tidal generator during ongoing trials at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

The SR2000 has been engineered and built with a 16-meter rotor diameter for each of its 1MW turbines.

The device is 64 meters long, and weighs around 550 tonnes.
