WaveRoller design ticks all the right boxes

Lloyd’s Register has approved the detailed design review of the WaveRoller wave energy device from the Finnish wave developer AW-Energy.

The Design Appraisal Certificate guarantees that the WaveRoller design adheres to predetermined codes and standards regarding safety, functionality and reliability, AW-Energy informed.

Prior to receiving the certificate, AW-Energy submitted its design documents to Lloyd’s Register engineers for examination.

John Liljelund, CEO of AW-Energy, said: “Credibility and bankability are at the core of our values. Talk is cheap so we want our partners and customers to know we can deliver what we promise.”

The Design Appraisal Certificate is a part of AW-Energy’s technology certification plan which is building up to the Lloyd’s Register Fitness for Service Certificate.

The next step is to certify the manufacturing of WaveRoller wave energy device which validates that industry best practices are met in the processes, AW-Energy said.

One of the AW-Energy customers, Ireland’s ESB International, which is developing the wave energy project off Ireland’s west coast, welcomed the news.

Conor Cooney, Technology Manager for the WestWave project, from ESB Innovation’s Technology Innovation Unit, said: “We require a specific level of certification from our partners as we believe certified technology is the key to exploiting our ocean energy resource. Therefore, we are encouraged to see AW-Energy reach this important milestone.”
