Cardiff University’s Innovation Network has organized a free-to-attend event on the progress made with the development of Swansea and Cardiff tidal lagoon projects.

The event, to be held on September 6, 2017, will feature Mark Shorrock, the Chief Executive Officer of Tidal Lagoon Power (TLP), the company behind the proposed tidal lagoons, who will give an update on the projects and the associated opportunities.

“The Swansea Bay and Cardiff Tidal Lagoons offer huge potential for Wales and the UK. The green light from Government will give first-mover advantage in a new global industry, capable of scaling to sustain tens of thousands of skilled manufacturing and construction jobs – potentially 71,000 jobs will be sustained at the fleet’s peak construction,” it is stated on the event page.

As reported earlier, the 320MW Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project was awarded a Development Consent Order in 2015 and is currently being prepared for construction.

The £1.3 billion Swansea ‘pathfinder’ project will act as a blueprint for a program of larger tidal infrastructure to generate renewable electricity at a scale, and is said to be capable of meeting the annual electricity requirement of 90% of the homes in Swansea Bay.

The Cardiff tidal lagoon project, currently in design phase with a 2019 target for planning application, is estimated to be able to provide enough electricity to power the equivalent to every home in Wales with its 3GW potential installed capacity.

Cardiff University’s Innovation Network was founded with the mission to develop a stronger network of links between industry and academia in order to promote innovation and collaboration.
