Cape Sharp Tidal exports first power to Nova Scotia grid

Cape Sharp Tidal has connected North America’s most powerful tidal turbine, an OpenHydro 2MW, to Nova Scotia’s power grid. The turbine is now producing enough energy to power 500 Nova Scotia homes. The electrical conversion system has been validated by the Canadian Standards Association which ensures the open-center turbine power export is compliant with the Canadian grid.

Nova Innovation, an Edinburgh-based tidal energy developer, has secured €2.25 million through the European Commission under the second phase of Horizon 2020’s SME Instrument program. The funding was granted for Nova Innovation’s D2T2 (Direct Drive Tidal Turbine) project, designed to produce a commercial demonstrator of Nova’s direct drive tidal turbine technology.

HydroQuest to deploy tidal demo off Brittanytn-hydroquest-to-deploy-tidal-demo-off-normandy

French hydrokinetic technology developer, HydroQuest, will together with Constructions Mécaniques de Normandie (CMN) install 1MW hydrokinetic tidal turbine at the Paimpol-Bréhat site, off Brittany, France, starting from the second half of 2017. The demonstrator’s goal is to validate this machine’s performance under real operating conditions.

European ocean energy industry outlines research priorities

The European Technology and Innovation Platform for Ocean Energy (TP Ocean) has defined the research priorities for Europe’s ocean energy industry in the latest report released today. It is the first European document to prioritize research topics for the ocean energy industry with the aim to increase reliability, while reducing risk and technology costs, across the industry in the most efficient manner.
