Aecon inks Triton deal

Black Rock Tidal Power (BRTP), a Schottel Hydro subsidiary, has awarded the contract to fabricate its Triton S40 tidal power platform to Aecon Atlantic Industrial.

The contract marks the first full-scale fabrication of this technology in the world.

The instream tidal device will be installed at BRTP’s berth located at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE), near Parrsboro, Bay of Fundy, in 2017.

Triton is a semi-submersible platform that will host 40 SIT 250 turbines generating up to 2.5 MW of power.

Nils Hirsch, BRTP’s General Manager, said: “This was a highly competitive bidding process involving several highly qualified Atlantic Canada companies. With their strong experience in marine fabrication, Aecon’s workforce will be a significant benefit to our project.”

The platform has two spar buoys that provide buoyancy and house both electrical and mechanical equipment for the installation. It is attached to a gravity base with a universal joint, allowing the array to align to the direction of the flow.

The use of multiple small turbines together with Triton’s easy maintenance approach reduces both capital and maintenance costs, according to BRTP.
