The second tidal energy turbine for the Paimpol-Bréhat tidal array demonstration project has been assembled in Brest.

The second DCNS/OpenHydro tidal turbine with the rated capacity of 500 kW, and a diameter of 16 metres, will be unveiled on Friday, May 13, by the French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy Ségolène Royal in Brest.

The Paimpol-Bréhat demonstration project, jointly developed by DCNS and EDF, involves the installation of two OpenHydro’s tidal turbines with combined capacity of 1 MW, 16 km off the coast of Brittany, France, at the water depths of 35 m.

The first turbine has been installed in January this year, and will be joined by the second turbine in the following months.

The project is expected to pave the way for the deployment of pre-commercial tidal farms and the development of a tidal energy industrial sector in France.
