Tidal and wave standards set in China

China hosted this year’s annual International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) TC-114 plenary, providing a forum for international experts who work to produce IEC standards for tidal and wave energy converters.

IEC TC-114 is the committee which has been developing international technical specifications and standards for marine energy conversion systems, with the primary focus on conversion of wave, tidal and other water current energy into electrical energy.

This month Dynamic Systems Analysis’ (DSA) Co-founder and Director of Engineering, Ryan Nicoll, attended the annual IEC TC-114 plenary held in Guangzhou, China, leading the team developing and updating mooring standards for marine renewable technology.

DSA, representing Canada, along with other international experts from Japan, Spain, Denmark, UK, USA, Korea, Ireland, France, China, Germany, and Israel, produced an IEC standard for the design of mooring systems for wave, tidal, and floating river energy converter technologies, DSA informed.

This, along with other standards like power performance assessment, power quality, acoustic monitoring, and so on, will help ensure new devices and power projects certified to IEC standards are safe and reliable.
