PLOCAN welcomes MIKE

The Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands (PLOCAN) has implemented DHI’s MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 marine modelling software.

PLOCAN is a research facility co-funded by the Economy and Competitiveness Ministry of the Spanish government and the Canary Islands government, with the aim of supporting the research and development in the fields of ocean science and technology.

Co-financed with the European Union’s FEDER funds, the centre will focus on propagating the use of information technology and marine communications in Gran Canaria, using modern and specialised infrastructure for massive and parallel data processing, DHI’s press release reads.

The target of this infrastructure is to increase and strengthen the processing capacity of the centre using bi- and tri-dimensional marine and coastal models, as well as to incorporate software tools for 2D and 3D modelling of oceanographic data.

MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 will allow users of the centre to conduct a variety of studies, such as studies of the operating conditions of new offshore utilities, analysis of the environmental impact of human activities, studies of coastal and sea dynamics, and studies of the ecology of marine flora and fauna species, amongst others.
