DeltaStream tidal device deployed off Wales

Tidal Energy Ltd, a Cardiff-based tidal energy developer, has deployed its DeltaStream tidal energy device into Ramsey Sound, off Pembrokeshire, Wales. The 400 kW demonstration device weighs 200 tonnes, with a frame 16 m long and 18 m high. The deployment will be followed by about two weeks of checking and testing before it will be possible to power energy into the system.

Atlantis, ScottishPower Renewables join forces for tidal

Atlantis Resources and ScottishPower Renewables are teaming up to a develop a joint portfolio of projects for the fast growing tidal energy sector. Atlantis’ Scottish project development vehicle, Tidal Power Scotland Ltd (TPSL), will acquire ScottishPower Renewables’ (SPR) portfolio of tidal projects in exchange for a 6% shareholding in TPSL for SPR. The SPR tidal power portfolio includes two sites – at the Sound of Islay, and at the Ness of Duncansby.

Orkney-based tidal energy developer Scotrenewables Tidal Power has secured £5.7 million for the demonstration of its SR2000 floating tidal turbine. The investment is expected to take the SR2000 programme through the next operational phase. Scotrenewables is currently nearing the completion of the build of its 2 MW SR2000 system in the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast.

BPS installs bioWAVE off Australia

BioPower Systems (BPS) has deployed its 250 kW bioWAVE pilot demonstration wave energy unit off Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia. The bioWAVE was deployed by a crane-equipped ship, which transported the device to the site and lowered it into the water. The device is expected to operate for a 12-month period before being decommissioned.

Sweden gets grid-connected wave energy plant

The first 1 MW of the Sotenäs Wave Energy Plant, developed by Seabased in cooperation with Fortum and Swedish Energy Agency, was connected to the Swedish national grid via a 10 km subsea cable after the 120 tonnes subsea generator was deployed. The project is located 8 km northwest of Smögen, Sweden.
