IMarEST to hold Metocean course in London

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology’s (IMarEST) course in Metocean awareness will be held this September in London.

Metocean quantifies the impact and effect of weather and sea conditions, including winds, waves, currents and water levels, on a wide range of activities in the offshore marine renewables, and oil and gas industries.

This includes seismic and geotechnical surveys, drilling campaigns, new project developments, tow-out and installation of structures, operations and maintenance, and field abandonment.

Bev Mackenzie, IMarEST’s Technical Director, said: “Accurate guidance is critical for safe and efficient operations across the oil and gas industry but also to the wider offshore renewables industry and supporting services such as shipping and helicopter operations.

“This is always a popular course and one where attendees will gain a vital understanding of Metocean and how greater knowledge can improve safety, improve decision-making and planning, and reduce costs for the offshore industries.”

Speakers on the September course, which runs from September 22 to 24, include Colin Grant, the current Chair of the Metocean Committee of the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and Gus Jeans whose career as a professional oceanographer spans 20 years, along with Ian Leggett, who recently retired from Shell after 30 years with the company managing data collection programmes, weather forecast services and the development of operational statistics and design criteria.

The Metocean course is targeted at project managers and engineers in the offshore and renewables industries, involved in operations or design, and it will be held at IMarEST London headquarters.

The next course in the global series takes place from October 27 to 29 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in Houston, USA, from November 18 to 19.

IMarEST represents the professional institution that brings together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.
