Arup ready for Swansea tidal project works

Arup has been appointed by Laing O’Rourke as its lead design and engineering partner to deliver the lagoon’s 410 metre turbine house and sluice structure block.

Arup will provide a variety of services on the project, including structural and geotechnical design, and project management.

It will also perform mechanical, engineering and plumbing (MEP) engineering, minor environmental planning and marine engineering design, Arup’s press release reads.

As reported earlier, Laing O’Rourke has been named as preferred bidder for £200 mln contract to deliver Swansea Bay tidal lagoon’s turbine house and sluice structure block. Following this announcement, Laing O’Rourke named Arup as its lead design and engineering partner for the contract.

Henrietta Ridgeon, Project Director at Arup, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed such an innovative development. The global tidal industry is entering an exciting phase and we’re at the very forefront of its development here in Swansea.”

Swansea Bay 320 MW tidal lagoon project, developed by Tidal Lagoon Power, has a design life of 120 years and a net annual power output of over 500 GW/h.

It is enough to meet the annual electricity requirement of over 155.000 homes, or over 90 percent of homes in the Swansea Bay area, according to Tidal Lagoon Power, the developer behind the project.

To remind, General Electric and Andritz Hydro were named as preferred bidders to supply turbines for the proposed project, and China Harbour Engineering Company will undertake the marine works.

The project was granted planning consent by UK Secretary of State Amber Rudd on June 9, 2015.
