Lockheed Martin to deliver tidal turbine for Meygen

Atlantis has placed an order to Lockheed Martin to supply the company with AR1500 tidal turbine for the Meygen tidal project.

The turbine ordered is AR1500 with the capacity of 1.5 MW.

Lockheed Martin is tasked with the manufacturing of the steel turbine housing, the assembly of all the turbine modules, including the gearbox and generator.

The company will also perform systems integration and quality assurance of the overall turbine delivery programme, Atlantis’ press release reads.

The delivery of the turbine is scheduled for 2016.

Tim Cornelius, CEO of Atlantis, commented: “This new multi-million pound contract with Lockheed Martin further develops the strong relationship that exists between the two companies who are at the forefront of tidal power generation.”

Atlantis, the developer of Meygen project, has also announced that contractors have commenced horizontal directional drilling operations at the MeyGen site in Caithness, to create the bores for the cables which will link the onshore site at Ness of Quoys with the four subsea turbines.

The drilling is expected to take four months and will be carried out by Manchester-based O’Connor Utilities Ltd, according to Atlantis.

Once completed, Meygen project is expected to have 398 MW of total installed capacity, with 269 tidal turbines. It is located in the Pentland Firth, Scotland.
