India to grab its share in ocean-based industries

Indian Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan, is calling for India to engage more seriously in the exploitation of ocean energy.

Harsh Vardhan addressed the public at the inaugural programme of the Golden Jubilee year celebration of CSIR-NIO, held at National Institute of Oceanography.

“We must move fast to grab India’s legitimate share in the emerging ocean-based industries, which include off-shore wind, tidal and wave energy, offshore extraction of oil and gas in deep sea, seabed mining, ocean monitoring and control,” the Times of India quotes Vardhan as saying.

The speech the minister made is significant, because it comes at a time when China is starting to explore various parts of Indian Ocean, in order to harness the clean energy, Indian media report.

“The Ocean holds the potential of being the source of limitless, sustainable resources. Science has taught us that all things began in the Ocean, and so it is to the ocean that we must turn for the future,” Vardhan added.
