Tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts the energy of the tides into electricity or other useful forms of power and is entirely predictable and renewable. The tide is created by the gravitational effect of the sun and the moon on the earth causing cyclical movement of the seas.

There are two forms that can be used for harnessing tidal energy:

Tidal Range

Tidal Range is the vertical difference in height between the high tide and the succeeding low tide. Artificial tidal barrages or lagoons may be constructed to capture the tide. Turbines in the barrier or lagoon generate electricity as the tide floods into the reservoir. The retained water can then be released through turbines, again generating electricity once the tide outside the barrier has receded.

Tidal Stream

Tidal Stream is the flow of water as the tide ebbs and floods, and manifests itself as tidal current. Tidal Stream devices seek to extract energy from this kinetic movement of water, much as wind turbines extract energy from the movement of air. The sea currents created by movement of the tides are often magnified where water is forced to flow through narrow channels or around headlands.

The estimated worldwide potential of this energy source is between 50 and 100 GW.

In 2010 Alstom started the tests on a 500kW tidal power demonstrator at EMEC, and up unitl now its tidal devices have generated over 1GWh of electricity to the Scottish grid. Alstom has taken advantage of this significant experience to improve the design of its tidal stream turbine and now offers the Oceade™ 18 – 1.4 MW, which is ready to be deployed at the tidal energy farm that will be selected in the call for expressions of interest launched in September 2013 by the French government.

Offshore Energy Exhibition and Conference (OEEC) 2019

Offshore Energy Exhibition and Conference (OEEC) is where the energy transition takes place. It is Europe’s leading gathering of the entire offshore energy industry and your opportunity to network with highly qualified experts and professionals across global markets.

For more than 12 years OEEC is unique in bringing together the offshore energy industry sectors oil & gas, offshore wind and marine energy. More than 550 exhibitors from around the world present their newest services, projects and innovative products. On top of this OEEC presents international trade missions, pavilions, exclusive network lounges of the OEEC member club, the Startup Zone, matchmaking areas, the Stage and networking drinks. Approximately 12,000 professionals will visit the exhibition, take part in strategic discussions, immersive technical conference sessions focusing on the future and technical developments in the industry. Three days of networking and together shaping the future of energy.

So the question is not if but how you will be participating at Offshore Energy 2019.
